Lived with AML for 3 years, 3 months

Little did I know that April 30, 2002 would change my life forever. I came home from work feeling weak, with symptoms that pointed to leukemia, but I was totally unaware of this at the time. I followed my usual routine though, ate dinner, watched a little television, and helped the kids with their homework. As I was getting ready for bed, I decided to research my symptoms on the Internet: bruises, shortness of breath, pale in color, fatigue, and heavy periods. The answer was leukemia.

I dreaded the visit to the emergency room that evening. After an examination by the physician, a blood test confirmed that I had leukemia. Tears started rolling down my face. There were no words from my husband or anyone else that could ease the shock. Three rounds of chemotherapy, over a period of six months, followed shortly after my diagnosis. I am thankful to the entire staff at Torrance Memorial Hospital and especially to Dr. Chester Gottlieb and Dr. Michael Nakata. Their quality care saved my life.

I have been in remission for almost a year now. I thank God every day for giving me another chance in life. I now cherish the days that I used to take for granted. Though the chemotherapy scars left on my body have now healed, I believe that I am mentally scarred for life. Leukemia is a life-changing experience. It has made me think about death a little, but it has also made me think about life a whole lot more. The whole process was difficult at best, but I'm grateful for being blessed with a great support system. My husband, my children, my parents, siblings, my in-laws, friends, and even new-found friends were a great source of hope. I would not be able to fully express my gratitude and love to them. This whole experience has brought us all closer. We gave each other hope during the darkest of times, making us stronger in the process.

I write my story in hope that it serves as an inspiration to others. Keep in mind that there is always hope and that it starts from within you.
