Jackson TX United States male Living with ALL for 6 years Age: 10
Jackson had been complaining that his knee hurt and had swollen glands in his neck. We took him to his pediatrician in early September 2003 and blood tests and X-rays showed nothing wrong. We thought he just had a virus that had settled in his joint. Jackson's knee stopped hurting and he seemed to bounce back just fine.
A few weeks later, we noticed excessive bruising from the slightest cut or bump. On September 29, we took him to the pediatrician again because of a continual low-grade fever. Further blood tests showed a problem- A BIG problem. Jackson was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and was admitted to the hospital that night. He was just 3 years old. He couldn't even pronounce "leukemia," much less understand what was going on, why he was in the hospital, or how much his life was about to change.
Jackson has successfully completed his chemotherapy and is off treatment. He finished on March 31, 2006. He threw out all his medicine, his dosing cups and syringes. He is in remission and is getting stronger everyday. Jackson has taken up horseback riding and joined Cub Scouts. He is no longer the "cancer kid." He's just a "kid."
