Charlotte Irene Cummins Cincinnati, OH United States female Living with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma for 7 years, 6 months Age: 57
Hello my name is Charlotte Cummins and I live with Splenic Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma with villous lymphocytes.
I started feeling sick back in January 2003. The emergency room doctors initially told me that I had the flu. They prescribed antibiotics and said that I should follow-up in one week if I wasn’t feeling better. I felt absolutely worse, returned to the emergency room, and ended up seeing a different doctor than before. This doctor believed that it was something more serious than the flu and admitted me for further testing.
Many things were going through my mind and I was afraid of what the test results would show. After five days of testing, I was finally diagnosed with cancer. That was the worst thing anyone has ever told me. I'm a mother of four kids and have six wonderful grandchildren.
I was at Mercy Hospital for almost three months and was then transferred over to University Hospital. I was released there after one week, only to begin my outpatient treatment. I am also a part of a research team because I have a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. I started out with four shots a week and now receive three shots a week, along with several other medications.
I'm still scared even after one year and five months of treatment. It always helps though to know that I have such wonderful doctors and nurses who take such great care of me. I try to be positive and live each day as I can with my family and friends who have hung so tight with me through all of this.
I hope one day they'll find a cure for my type of cancer and all other types of cancers that touch the lives of so many. It is events like Light the Night that help us move closer to finding a cure. I'm so honored to be a part of it. I just want all of you to keep smiling and keep faith in your life and know you are not alone. Well this is my story and thank you for taking the time to read this. Thanks and God Bless All of You.
Always and Forever,
Charlotte
