I’m writing this story to give hope to some family who may have a young child recently diagnosed with AML. My daughter Emily was diagnosed with AML just one week before her first birthday in 1994. It was many trips to the doctor before the actual diagnosis was made. She was diagnosed with everything from ear infections to the mumps. Then after weeks the diagnosis came - AML. Emily was given her induction chemo and went into remission and very soon the doctors began talking about transplant. She had an autologous bone marrow transplant in February of 1995 at Duke Medical Center in Durham NC.

I just thank God for the great group of doctors she had at Brenners Children’s Hospital in Winston Salem, NC and all the nurses and staff that helped support us as a family through this time in our lives. Thanks to the Leukemia Society for the help in travel and lodging and Team in Training. Also, thank you to all our family members for everything they did during this time.

Emily is now 14 years old and a beautiful young lady full of life. She has no remembrance of the terrible ordeal she went through. She just hears stories and sees some pictures. That is a blessing she doesn't remember.
