Marquita Levene New Orleans, LA United States Female Living with ALL for 14 years, 8 months Age: 26
My name is Marquita Levene, and I was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) when I was 12 years old. When the doctor called my mom and told her he thought I had leukemia all I could do was cry.
I was admitted into Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans. The people there were great, and they made me feel at home.
The doctors started me on chemotherapy right away. I was so sick from the chemo, I couldn't eat, I couldn't do anything. I just wanted to lie in that bed and die. But my mom wouldn't let me. She made me eat and exercise. I stayed at the hospital for over three weeks, and I was on chemo for about a year and a half. Finally they stopped the chemo because I was doing great.
I learned a lot about cancer, and it was a big part of my life. I never thought this could happen to me, but I found out that it could happen to anyone at any age.
I also learned that cancer scares people. I lost a lot of friends during that time; I'm not sure why. Maybe they were afraid they would 'catch' it from me. But not all my friends ran off, and I am grateful for the ones that stood by me.
Today I am a freshman in college, and I have God to thank for that.
